Iska time aa gaya hai. Parle-G is back!

Parle-G sales were up by 10%-15% two weeks ago and was up 25% last week from the average for March. As it is one of the most sold biscuit brands in India, distributors, stores, and e-commerce channels stock it well. However, for the first time, the biscuit went out of stock in several areas recently.

In August 2019, Parle Products, the makers of the iconic Parle-G biscuits, said it was expecting to lay off up to 10,000 employees owing to ongoing economic slowdown hurting biscuit sales. That same month, Britannia’s managing director Varun Berry said the slowdown was so bad that consumers were thinking twice before buying even an INR5 product, the cheapest SKU
Parle-G is associated with relief. There are several images available showing Parle-G being handed out in relief camps, or to survivors of natural disasters. But perhaps, more importantly, Parle-G strikes a chord with the common man. Like Bunty from the web-series Sacred Games, who complains to his boss Gaitonde that he’s been subsisting on Parle-G in kaali chai.
