India seeks Blue Flag tag for 13 beaches, but the sustainability-focused criteria is a steep cliff

To get the certification, the beaches will have to fulfil 33 criteria under four categories — environment and education; environmental management; water quality; and safety.

The pristine Shivrajpur beach near the temple town of Dwarka in Gujarat has long been among the less explored. However, the footfall at this beach has increased 10-fold of late, thanks to some world-class amenities that were recently provided. The introduction of those facilities is part of India’s efforts to get the beach a Blue Flag, an elite sustainability title

The Centre is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the 13 beaches meet Blue Flag’s 33 exacting criteria by April, when the national jury will review the work and prepare the final list. Thereafter, Blue Flag’s international jury will make a spot visit to decide if the beaches make the cut.
