Jio’s manic pace is slowing. Is the telecom market nearing stability?

Jio has outperformed the incumbents on key metrics year on year, but probing a level deeper reveals a very different picture. From subscriber additions to ARPU to net profit, Jio’s march is slowing down, even as the old guard shows nascent signs of a fightback.

Jio declared its numbers for the fourth quarter of FY19 last week. Among observers of Indian telecom, Jio’s results are treated with all the pomp and frenzy of the Oscars. Indeed, in results season, the overwhelming narrative across the industry has been that there can only be one winner across categories. Jio. However, while it is widely reported
above, market stabilisation seems around the corner. The big question now is, will Jio pause and consider a U-turn on pricing? That may be on top of the incumbents’ wish list, but how the deep-pocketed maverick behaves is hard to predict. The only certainty is, you can expect the drumrolls to be less loud.
