Jio is getting what it wants. Is it good enough?

Increased data usage hasn’t translated into financial gains for the disruptor. A lot hinges on whether it can monetise content and grab high-value customers.

Jio declared its Q3 FY19 results yesterday. ET Prime’s analysis of the key numbers shows a bunch of interesting trends, beyond the widely reported fact that this was Jio’s fourth successive profitable quarter. Also, now that the initial customer frenzy around the brand is cooling, we home in on a set of critical factors on which rests its
last long. Jio came towards the end of 2016, and the situation turned worse. Unless the industry decides to stop the aggressive price war and freebies, telcos will continue to bleed. As of now, incumbents are bearing the brunt, but at some point Jio will also be affected, notwithstanding its deep pockets. ( Graphics by Abdul Shafiq)
