Aadhaar still needs a time machine

While the constitutionality of Aadhaar has been upheld, the Supreme Court’s intervention to control the use of the UIDAI database and improve its security, among other things, begs many crucial questions. Including some about the role of the court itself.

Given a chance to go back to the start of it all, should the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) implement Aadhaar the way it did? The answer is a rather emphatic no. But then, that's the commonsense answer. And not everything about the handling of Aadhaar passes the commonsense test. The Supreme Court judgment on Wednesday notwithstanding, an idea for a reward. The bottom lineUltimately, the judgment doesn’t absolve the fiduciaries of the flaws in the way Aadhaar was implemented. Privately, many among those who have been in favour of Aadhaar admit that there would need to be significant changes guiding the entire shebang if one were to start afresh. Or if a time machine was at hand.
