How neutral is Net neutrality?

Rather than heavy-handed and populist regulation, a golden mean will be one that allows telcos to justify their massive network investments while protecting consumer rights. (Yes, it’s possible.)

Net neutrality is a minefield of opinions, and Oliver’s has a lot of passionate takers. But is there a case for intelligent implementation of Net-neutrality principles acceptable to telecom companies as well as their customers — since, as the name suggests, the regulations need to be ‘neutral’ from all aspects, and for all stakeholders? In July, the Telecom
set of regulations, a smart approach would be to regulate anti-competitive and anti-consumer practices while allowing telcos to offer premium or priority services — thus bringing true value for every stakeholder. In contrast with John Oliver’s depiction, regulations should allow provisioning of lanes such that both Usain Bolt and Usain Bolt on a motorbike can ride without colliding.
